相傳凡巷弄的出入口、三叉路的直沖處(即所謂的「路沖」)以及河岸、池塘邊、村落的入口處等，都是不祥之處，易受到鬼邪的侵害，而「石敢當」有辟邪、止煞、鎮罡等作用，因此在這叉路口立下石敢當。
